When you think about
all the innumerable things that happen in life,
especially in your own life,
that all stem from a single moment of creation
that is beyond the control of anyone who has ever lived;
when you think about what you have done,
what others have done, and why everyone did what they did,
it is not hard to wonder, and it is not surprising to think,
about what may happen in the future-
however, we all forget that the future consists, and is built on,
the choices and the decisions that we make now,
and a combination of what we know for sure,
as well as the chaotic and unpredictable confluence
of the things that we come across and effect us,
which make us go wow!
Gravity, and anti-gravity;
Earth, and outer-space;
Strength, and fragility;
Confusion, and happiness-
two opposing sides of a single coin
tossed in the air, waiting to fall
and land on one side or the other,
and sometimes, depending on which way the wind blows
at a certain time of the day
can change the course of an entire life
and can move you in a particular direction
and can drive you in a natural way-
like the way that music can engage and drive
the heart, the mind, the spirit,
and the body of a dancer.
Wherever you happen to be at a given moment,
at a particular time in our life,
can effect you a great deal;
a writer, for example, writes differently
and about different things depending on where they are-
in a loud cafe, in their sanctuary at home,
while they are sitting down eating a meal,
listening to music in complete silence,
alone, or surrounded by people-
life effects a writer and their writing,
in ways that are always inspiring.
When you come up with an idea;
when you fall in love with something, or someone-
the idea, the thing, the person, takes over you
and becomes the most important thing in your life,
they become your life, and they become all that you want and desire,
and can make you feel out of this world,
but like you are even more connected to the world-
they can make you feel the happiest of the happy,
and as if you are walking on the moon in anti-gravity.
I went out into the world today
with a new camera, a new outlook, a new focus-
the world felt like a light-blessed river
being sustained by a towering waterfall of rainbow rain,
sparkling mist, and beautiful lotuses.
There was something different about me,
about my surroundings, that I felt I could not ignore-
it wasn’t clear to me what had changed, at first,
but the minute that I turned everything off:
my phone, my life, my world, my hopes,
my dreams, my fears, my knowledge;
I realised that I knew nothing,
I realised that I had missed so much,
I realised that every moment of blessed silence-
when the only thing you can hear is your own heart-
is in itself an intergalactic door.
I captured and I became something new in that moment;
the windmill of life turned in the breeze- I became frozen,
I felt awestruck by a new truth that was echoing in every direction,
I was touched to tears by a new clarity
that cleared-away the cobwebs of my imagination-space
and exposed a new picture of reality to me
that felt natural, vast, free of pretense.
I looked at myself differently,
I looked at my life with new eyes through a new lens,
I became enamoured again by the faces and the memories
that I have saved my entire life of my family and my friends,
I saw the source of the divine and great muse of enlightenment
from where all thought stems.
This world, our collective meaning,
continues to amaze and inspire me.
If someone was to take a picture of everything that is happening
right now- every choice that someone made,
every thought that someone had-
what would that picture look like,
what would that picture make someone on the outside looking-in realise:
perhaps that they are in fact on the inside looking-out;
maybe such an image would change what it is about life
that means so much to you,
maybe such an image would enthral you,
maybe such an image would send you mad.
I felt like a lone lotus, bobbing up and down in a pond-
reawakened, exposed, open to the new tides of the future
and the new light of a new era;
I felt like I was beginning my life again,
with new depths to explore about the entire universe-
like the first photo of a new camera.
The energy hit me as soon as I entered the club,
the second that I walked though the door
the sound of the music consumed and transformed me,
and as I closed my eyes I could immediately
feel my heart begin to ache and throb-
the beats of the music that filled the space
and released me from my body,
coursed through my consciousness and revealed to all the real me.
When I opened my eyes I saw everyone around me moving as one
up and down to the sonic tides, pulses of light,
and electricity being generated by the captivating DJ-
nothing else existed in that everlasting moment-
we all wanted to stay within the self-contained universe
for all eternity, to move until we could not move no more,
to stay standing and connected to each-other until night became day.
The palpable spirit of the music overcame all inhibitions,
names, identities, differences, and persuasions;
the voice that breathed phenomenal new life into the lungs
and mind of those dancing like the music was compelling them to dance,
nodding their head in-sync to the rhythm of the vibration-
everyone, including me, was literally in a trance.
The space span like a rapidly-rotating galaxy,
everyone in the club was like a shining-star-
populating, radiating, making the walls, the ceiling,
and the floor come alive and disappear,
as if they were not there;
boundaries fell, everything became spectral,
everything and everyone felt special, celestial,
like the world that we know and love
is one parallel of a universe of multi-levels.
You can’t conceive how natural and phenomenal coming together like this is.
You can’t get enough of the closeness, the gravity, the elevation that you feel-
some of us feel the need to reach above us and touch the illuminated sky,
some of us want to wrap our arms around someone,
share in every moment of euphoria
as if this was the night when we realised that you don’t need wings
to rise above and see the world for what it is-
all you need to do is forget what you think you know,
then you will feel true freedom, release, and you will fly.
The music intoxicates us to greater depths than alcohol.
The sound penetrates us and returns us to a state of being
that feels almost prenatal.
The equilibrium of rebirth and metamorphosis
that floods our minds and veins,
that emanates from our eyes and faces,
is something we can’t restrain.
The state of becoming one with each-other,
tide together through the gift and the effect of music,
is proof-positive that we all exist
as part of a as-yet unfulfilled harmonic music,
and our relationship with the world and ourselves
is universally mnemonic, symphonic, ironic.
When we are all enjoying the atmosphere of a club,
it’s music, it’s people, it’s energy,
the forces that arise in the moment,
we hear and we become a part of something unbelievable-
a music that we hear and move to that we can also feel-
a cosmic reverberation that exists beyond the ultrasonic.
I feel like I have returned from death, returned to life,
I feel like I have been resurrected.
For over a week, I lay helpless in my bed,
as my thoughts and dreams went into overdrive
and manifested into different and varied guises,
colours, textures, and ideas- some that I do not remember entirely,
some that I choose not to recognize.
At some point in our lives,
we all have this urge that appears before our eyes
that tells us to look within and begin a journey to find ourselves;
there are so many schools of thought on the subject
of how to embark on the ultimate journey of identity:
a walk in the woods, a prolonged period of silence
and deep-thought around a fire,
reading a thought-provoking book-
all methods that I would recommend, which have served me in the past.
Being ill, however;
having your body and mind feel like they are turning against you,
feeling like you are locked in a prison cell
with your worst enemy: incapacity.
This new year has not began as I had hoped.
Unfortunately, the normal feeling of euphoria of Christmas
did not carry me over the cusp of New Years Day
with the normal feeling of joy and the smile of happiness on my face.
I felt like I had been struck by lightning
and had fallen from the tallest building in the world
to the hard and unforgiving ground below,
and it all happened so fast,
and I didn’t know exactly what had happened, I didn’t feel a thing.
I was broken. I just wanted to feel better,
and for all that I was feeling and experiencing to come to an end.
No one is a statue. No one is bullet-proof, untouchable,
unfliching of the debris of life,
and everyone is stricken from time-to-time by something
that feels foreign and alien of themselves,
that is not easy to purify ourselves of;
we all must accept that life itself,
and our interactions with what life has in store for us,
is nearly always going to be out of our control.
For the last seven days, I feel like I have been in space-
circling the world, instead of being a part of it;
coccooned in a bubble; fighting to find my way back
to feel well again- almost forgetting what normal
everyday things are that we take for granted:
the taste of food, the feeling of sunlight on my skin,
forgetting me.
Coming back to Earth now, finding my feel on solid ground
after so long of feeling weightless,
I am still regaining my balance,
I am still finding parts of my life to reconnect.
How I am feeling now is better than I was,
and I hope I continue to feel that way.
What I am feeling now makes me think of the memories
and recollections of the astronauts who went into space
and their perspectives of seeing the Earth from so far away,
and how seeing it changed them:
a way of seeing the world, which I see and understand now,
that has been called the “Overview Effect”.
At the edge of the solar system,
an image of mankind reflects a pin-prick of light
from a distant yellow star that we here on Earth
like to call our sun-
this light has become dimmer, smaller, and more distant
with every passing year,
but it is still the brightest and the most powerful source of light,
life, heat, and attraction,
as it has been since its internal furnace was turned on
and light at the centre of our solar system first shone.
I cannot help but marvel at what we have all achieved here on our planet-
every form of life since our worlds inception
has seen its share of troubles, cataclysms, and hits,
but all life has evolved- one way or another, for better or for worse,
changed their ways- because they’ve had to,
because in life there are no exceptions.
We all want to live, we all want more,
we all want someone to share it all with,
we all want to know what it is all for;
we all ask questions, we all want answers-
even if it just one:
one question, one answer,
can be the difference between to where,
and for how long your life will run.
Our lives would not be worth living
if we never had Earth to sustain us,
without Earth we would all still be
microscopic particles of interstellar dust.
We are all children of Earth,
still gestating, developing, and evolving,
within the womb, within the egg that is our planet,
that is our solar system,
that is the surface of a universal wishing-well.
We are all so close to the moment,
to the edge of taking the next steps in our evolution-
as we break through the barriers that have prevented us until now
from breaking through the shell.
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”-
the first words spoken by Neil Armstrong
when he became the first man to set foot on the Moon;
since I first heard those electrifying and spell-binding words
when I was a child
I have repeated them to myself from time to time,
so much so that those infamous words
have become more and more meaningful to me,
and they have become the words that are always on my mind.
What NASA, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins,
committed to achieving and achieved on July 21st, 1969,
were the first steps in a new age of human endeavour, accomplishment,
and optimism, that may still be progressing at the pace of a walk;
however what has happened as a result of the success
of the Apollo 11 mission and its crew can already be seen all over the world
in what has been a relatively short length of time.
Neil Armstrong embodied hope,
Neil Armstrong embodied adventure,
Neil Armstrong embodied the wonder of looking through a telescope,
Neil Armstrong embodied the best of all men and women-
that which makes us all look up at the sky and reach towards the future.
I wish I could have been alive to see the live televised broadcast
of the moment when Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon on a black and white TV-
the people that saw this extraordinary and super-human accomplishment
before their eyes must have been so overwhelmed,
they must have felt like they too were walking on the moon!
What a feeling of hope must have been in the air between everyone,
what a sight it must have been to see!
Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11,
from the moment that they were launched into space,
set into motion a new world that, to this day and forever,
will define the legacy of the entire Human race.
Space is not the final frontier,
space is but the first frontier in a universe of boundless possibilities-
that for every answer that we uncover about it
it brings up another ten more questions,
and for every galaxy that we discover
we find more planets orbiting around stars very similar to Earth
and our own sun.
Like most people that I admire,
I was never fortunate enough to actually meet Neil Armstrong;
but that did not impede me from being inspired by him,
it did not stop me from seeing myself in him,
and it has not stopped thousands, millions, of other people
from all around the world to follow in his footsteps-
as astronauts will continue to do so in the future
when they first set foot on Mars,
and they will no longer need to imagine
what it must have felt like to be him.
Neil Armstrong will never be forgotten,
his spirit still lives in the heart of us all,
and one day what he began with his first foot-step on the Moon
will carry humanity beyond our planet to the stars!
Where we will prosper, where we will evolve, and where we will shine!
One day, because of Neil Armstrong, because of our need to better ourselves,
humanity will achieve universal greatness-
because of our legacy, because of our first steps,
because of our giant leaps,
that were taken for us all by great heroes
for all mankind.
The universe spins, and then stops in-place-
like the tumbler of a lock,
the correct key and combination has been found
to be able to break the seal and the silence
and see what is behind the door that we call space.
Space has no end, the universe goes on unimpeded-
they are the eternal example of knowing the answer to something,
but not knowing the question that preceded.
Just as the Human face is capable of conveying
an endless array of expressions and emotions,
the face of the universe has its own limitless,
constantly evolving and changing, spectacle-
that is but one layer:
the translucent skin of its covering,
the surface level of its oceans.
Most of the time, to us, the universe wears its “poker-face”-
that is because we see most of it from so far away
that it almost looks as if it were occurring in still-life;
but the closer that you get the more detail that you see,
and the more it tells you about itself,
and the undiscovered facets and wonders that are rife.
The skin of the universe has a pigment to it
the colour of which we have yet to see or dream of.
At this point, we are only familiar with the colours of the spectrum;
but there exists more colour within the atom of a sun
than you could ever see in a rainbow in the sky above.
Appearance isn’t everything.
What you think you are seeing is rarely reality.
If you were an omnipotent god, who went by the name of “Hindsight”,
you would know that in the gaps between moments
there is so much more to see.
Expressions are an insight into something or someone’s character,
but they cannot tell you the whole story of the face alone-
we need to know more about what is happening underneath and inside
before the ultimate truth can be known.
Every face was once new and young
and unmarked by the weather of existence,
but over time every face changes-
so too has the universe’-
in fact, you could probably say that it is life’s universal profession:
and that, to me, is the example of the eternal expression.
I rise above the sky,
looking down at you from space-
removing myself from paradise
was the only way that I could think of,
and this hostile and inhospitable void
seemed like the perfect place-
to see you so close, and now so far away;
to see the tears falling from your eyes,
and now to see you motionless, isolated, and astray.
Reality is much more complicated than fantasy-
fantasy rarely strays from a single thought;
while reality veers, and turns, and reshapes, and returns,
what has been wrought.
Sometimes that can be fun and refreshing,
but most of the time, when actuality catches up with practicality,
it is often confusing, crushing, and heart-breaking.
There are some things in life that can never live up to your expectations
or your wildest imaginations,
there are things that may seem dull and mundane in the rain;
however, I have always thought of expectations as a guide,
but not a blueprint of your heart,
and that clouds and storms are momentary creations
that can’t be sustained.
From space, Earth is a breath-taking, blue, crystal ball,
beacon of wonder, and of indescribable beauty;
but below the clouds,
disputes and resentments are being played-out,
and crimes are being committed
that should ask of us all to question each others morality.
Divide, be different, and distinguish yourself from others,
is an instinctual genetic message left to us in our DNA
from our learned ancient cousins-
but does that mean that one day we will all be so remote from each other
that we no longer want to embrace the differences between us,
or even want to talk?
I still have hope for us all, and for our planet;
but I guess you start to question everything you have ever known
when you go for a space-walk.
So many people live in fish tanks,
but they will never see a coral reef;
so many people get to a point in their lives
when they stop asking questions,
and instead focus everything on a singular belief.
We once saw “inanimate objects”
and thought of them as things that are uncomplex,
inconsequential, to be taken advantage of, and overlooked-
we used to believe that because a thing does not appear to move
that they must not be alive,
and so can be pushed with impunity to destruct.
All life is the offspring of the same ocean;
however, some are afraid to return, some don’t want to return,
but some do return to retrace the steps from what they have become;
whether from the seas of Earth,
or the infinite expanse of space-
all life is unique, and yet cosmologically, intrinsically,
irrationally, illogically, connected, one and the same-
from the beginning, until all life has been bred and done.
Sometimes, time, passion, patience, and discovery,
is all you need to see the web of the stars,
and the similarities between humanity and the Great Barrier Reef-
that is the way that I see things,
that is my coral belief.
A flash of light.
The birth of something vast, and yet infinitesimally small.
A seed of life in a perpetual night.
The rise of consciousness, chaos, order, and the legacy of all.
Oceans of energy, tides of infinite direction and dimension,
islands of independence and inter-dependency
all in a constant state of reinvention, floating, twisting, and turning,
on a perceivably black but in reality multi-coloured sea.
Every galaxy, every star, every planet, every quantum of life,
has a legacy and also an ancestry and a lineage to the light
that still illuminates after billions of years-
a celestial bloodline that links every newborn to every nebula,
that stems from the core of every planet
to the heart of every intergalactic pioneer.
The legacy of humanity is the same correlating story as that of the universe,
and has been since that first evolutionary flash-
and that symbiosis will continue to last
even after what we think of ourselves and the world
has returned to dust and ash.
Their are some who fear the unknown depths of their own minds,
just as they fear the oceans of Earth,
or the uncertainty and the confusion of the dark-
such trepidation has a gravity to it that is easy to orbit,
but which at the same time holds them back
and colours their view of the world stark.
Just as the light from stars continues to shine
long after they expel their final solo performance to the audience
of their intergalactic neighbours-
every form of energy, every particle, every person, affects another-
even as it dims and wavers.
The way we were, the way we are, the way we are going,
the way we have always been, and the way we are always going to be,
is life, the universe, the beginning, the end, existing as one,
then and now- and in a word,
that is our legacy.
